Animals get supplements to stimulate them to take in nutrients. The lick ingredients should complement the pasture and at the same time ensure optimal utilisation of the available plant material. It is important that the right nutrients are given for each time of year. Micro flora is essential for digestion in the rumen. Lick should not replace the available roughage, but simply complement it. Supplementary feed is only effective if enough roughage is available. If the leak intake is too high, there is often too little roughage available. Lick should be palatable and should be given often. Winter lick must be given daily to ensure that the mycobacterial flora in the rumen does not abate. Protein is essential for the formation of the micro - flora.
